Denny Joyce

Who's Denny?

  • Denny Joyce has been on the CIM Board since the event was founded in 1983.
  • He's run it several times, but more importantly he has contributed his expertise in law enforcement throughout the years (he's a Naval Academy grad, retired FBI agent, and currently a private investigator).
  • In the CIM's early years his connections were vital to negotiating the assistance of the National Guard for traffic control and emergency services.
  • Denny has been a CIM Board president several times, most recently in 2007 & 2008, overseeing the CIM's 25th Anniversary festivities.
  • Denny has seen it all at the CIM over the years and is well-qualified to be our official historian.
  • He is an accomplished CIM ambassador at other events' Expos, although you might not recognize him in his 49'er gold miner costume! See the photos of him in full costume below.
  • More recently, Denny has volunteered his time as the elite athlete hospitality suite coordinator, and he graciously hosts the VIP finish line party.

We will post his reports here - be they humorous antidotes from CIM Board meetings, snippets of little known CIM history, elite athlete bumblings, or the scores of recent Navy football games!

Denny knows the CIM!

Visit the CIM History page for a year by year, step by step running of the CIM and 25 stories that were written about the CIM in honor of its 25th Anniversary in 2007. See Denny in his early ears with the CIM!

Denny’s 2010 CIM Travel Schedule

Look for Denny at the CIM expo booths at the Boston (April 19), Vancouver (May 2) and/or Toronto (Oct. 17) marathons.  If you find him there's a good chane he'll review his favorite Irish Bars. Denny is not following the famous Horace Greeley quote “Go West Young Man” because his travels seem to take him North... and across the border. Denny says he goes north because he loves the Canadian runners who leave their winter behind when they run the CIM, and who have a good time doing it.

A special attraction at the Boston booth will be three time CIM winner Bruce Deacon, who also was a member of the Canadian Olympic team. Denny had the wild idea of a poster of Bruce crossing the finish line with the caption  “Ask me about the course...  I like it!”

If you haven’t figured it out yet,  the folks who have worked so hard to make the CIM such a special race for runners have a darn good time doing it.  Denny's enthusiasm always captures the spirit of the race!

DENNY CROSSES BORDER

The weekend of October 10th I went north to handle the CIM Expo booth at the Royal Victoria Marathon in beautiful Victoria BC.  Was a perfect weekend and the weather matched the CIM on one of our best days.  The expo was smaller than ours and we were next to the Disney Booth.  Was good because their medals are huge and the kids wandering around who liked to snatch medals were drawn there, even though the adults thought the CIM medals were first class.  Our shirts got rave notices from the women cause us guys can’t gush over pretty things.

The biggest attraction was the course profile, and the race “alumni” helped sell our fastest course in the west brag. A couple of moments of confusion however.  When is your race?  What is the temperature?   I said the second Sunday after Thanksgiving and the temperatures ran from 40 to 52.   After a series of strange looks during the day I finally asked why the expression and was told that Canadian Thanksgiving was October 12th and it might be better to explain temperatures in Celcius.  Yeah - 40 celcius would be a little hot.

Danny Gonzales of 1986 winner stopped by to pass on his greetings (he won the masters division the next day) and of course there was the happy reunion with our CIM three time winner, Bruce Deacon.  A few stories were also told over a couple of beers after the expo.  Rod Dixon was a special guest of the race and I also had a chance to visit with him.

Finally as a trained investigator I did find the premier Irish bar and made it my evening office.  In closing I wanted to say the title I first had for this blog was  “Denny does Victoria” but this was quietly vetoed by my wife.

Denny's 2009 Boston Marathon Report

Denny's daughter qualified for Boston at her first marathon: the 2008 CIM. So the proud Papa traveled with her to Beantown. While there he helped out CIM's Asst. RD Julie Fingar at the Boston Marthon Expo in the CIM booth. Below he reports back.

One day to go, things are great. we have a great expo booth location. the hats are super and drawing the "alulmni" to our booth. 100 percent positive reports on our race and a lot of folks who have heard about our reputation and are planning on giving us a shot. Denise Robson, our Canadian master is a star, giant picture in packet pickup room. she is also a john hancock employee. folks really like our soup at the finish and believe it or not the extra porta potties at the start. multiple comments on both. my daughter arrived and dad is buying her her boston jacket this morning. julie is a great tour guide, we haven't got lost on the subway and we are eating well and... they have sam adams at the expo...life is good ....denny

CIM Boston hat

This was Denny's idea!

...to provide runners who qualified for the Boston Marathon at the CIM one of these cool runner hats embroidered with "CIM, My Boston Marathon Qualifier!" To recieve the hat the qualifier must enter and run Boston, and the hat must be picked up at the CIM Booth at the Boston Marathon Expo, as part of your Boston Marathon experience. The hats are not mailed.

Should the CIM do this each year? Email Denny to let him know your thoughts!
