Overview: Read about the inspirational beginnings of Jason Harper's plan to help the students at Oak Ridge Elementary School, including the creation of Equal Start (2005), and his 100-Mile "The Extra Mile" pledge run around Sacramento (May 2008) that raised $85,000 and led to the Extra Mile Run 2009.
The Extra Mile is bringing awareness to the plight of health care for the children of Sacramento's inner-city. Jason Harper, Founder of The Extra Mile Run, began serving on the campus of Oak Ridge Elementary School in the heart of Sacramento's roughest neighborhoods.
The Extra Mile Run 2009 campaign has been launched. ‘Be Change: Run For A Reason’ is an opportunity for your love of running to be utilized to change the life of an inner-city child by becoming an Extra Mile Runner and committing to the 2009 California International Marathon.
Each Extra Mile Runner can run the California International Marathon to raise awareness and financial support for each child enrolled at Oak Ridge Elementary School. Located in one of California’s roughest inner-cities, children are in desperate need of academic supplies, school shoes and clothes, enhanced nutrition, and on-going health care.
This December nearly 30,000 runners will pour down the streets from Historic Folsom to Downtown Sacramento in the California International Marathon. Our goal is to match one runner to every student so more than four hundred of those runners will run on behalf of an individual child from Oak Ridge Elementary.
If you are not able to run the entire 26.2 mile race, two runners can partner to run a two-person relay. Or grab two more runners and divide the 26.2 mile course into a four-person relay. Regardless of your ability, begin training today and secure your spot as an Extra Mile Runner.
REGISTER TODAY!
Begin the journey to change a life. When you register you will run to raise the standard of living for an inner-city child. Each registered Extra Mile Runner will receive an Extra Mile Runner Team T-shirt, access to beginner and intermediate marathon training schedules, access to online forums to share your success, weekly emails, fund-raising tips and the opportunity to pick the age and grade of the child you sponsor. The registration fee is $10 and you get a free t-shirt sent to you.
The Goal Extra Mile Runners seek sponsors for every mile they run. The goal is for each runner to raise $1000 to cover back pack, academic supplies, school shoes and clothes, enhanced nutrition, and on-going health care. One hundred percent of what is raised goes to secure these needs for every student.

Step 1: Register
Register as an Extra Mile Runner by clicking HERE and start telling every runner and jogger that their passion for running can propel purpose for an inner-city child.
Step 2
Register for the California International Marathon at www.runcim.org. We want 450 participants to run and jog in the CIM. This awareness will take place simultaneously as kids from the school run in the maraFUNrun near the finish line. Let the cause of a child’s health care propel you.
Step 3
Start Training with access to our online training programs at www.active.com/running. This website as well as www.bechange.cc will offer training schedules, running groups, nutritional advice, personal trainer access, Be Change Apparel, and a whole lot of motivation. The added value of all of this is completely FREE
Step 4
Begin fund-raising with access to our online fund-raising guide. Our goal is for each runner to raise $1000. This is feasible when your circle of influence is leveraged for a great cause. All we ask is for you to do your best. There is no obligation, we just ask that you do your best. Pick up a fundraising pack, identify the age and grade and choose if you are running for a girl or boy. We will give you updates throughout the fall to keep you focused.
Step 5 Join Our Email Database and start spreading the word to every person you know. If you know runners who are already planning on running in the CIM, ask them to consider running for a reason, an Oak Ridge Elementary School student! If you know race directors, running group coordinators, personal trainers, or anyone who can speak on our behalf, ask them to call us directly at 1-866-31-REACH. Jason will want to talk to them and ask for their influence.
